The analysis also saw Asda regain its title for the cheapest retailer for a big shop.

Each month, experts from Which? compare the average price of an eight-item shop at eight of the UK’s biggest supermarkets.

Aldi’s basket of goods came in at £62.21 closely followed by Lidl which was £1.32 more expensive.

Waitrose was the most expensive shop in August, with the same items totalling £79.51 – 22% more than Aldi.

In the larger trolly shop, which compares 133 items, Asda was cheapest at £325.35 with Morrisons (£341.28) being pushed into second place after it beat Asda last month.

Which? ended its analysis by calling for supermarkets to do more to help people with the cost of living.

It has suggested supermarkets stock a range of essential budget items that help people to eat healthier in smaller convenient stores. Morrisons is leading the way on this by pledging to stock 40 budget items in its smaller stores in the next few weeks.

The consumer group also wants to see an end to unclear pricing so customers can quickly work out the best value products and has called on the government to work with the supermarkets to make a difference to people’s households budgets.
