‘Ask for help’ if you’re in debt
People who are struggling with debt has been urged to ask for help.
Sam and Paul Helsby fell into financial difficulty when rising costs hit their family construction business.
Paul then suffered a stroke, which led to them losing the business and sent their linked personal debts soaring.
They soon found themselves owing £60,000, with demands for money arriving regularly and bailiffs knocking at their door.
Sam and Paul have now shared their experiences with BBC News, and admitted they were “scared to open the curtains”.
“We shut the world out,” said Paul.
However, he eventually opened up about his problems and decided to ask for help.
“As a joiner, I’ve always been a person who can fix everything,” Paul commented.
“Saying I can’t fix it, you have to let go and ask for help.”
Paul and Sam able to move forwards
After seeking help, Paul was made bankrupt, and Sam signed up to a debt relief order.
They were also able to make sense of their financial “mess” and take positive steps such as setting budgets for food, savings and occasions such as birthdays.
