British Gas encouraging pension credit applications
British Gas is encouraging their older customers to apply for pension credit, so they’ll get the winter fuel payment.
They’re aiming to reach about two million pensioners to make sure those eligible for pension credit know about its benefits.
This comes after Labour axed winter fuel payments for all but the most vulnerable pensioners.
No more winter fuel payment
Winter fuel payments will now only go to those receiving pension credit.
Previously, around 11.5 million people received these payments, but that could drop to fewer than two million this year. It’s estimated that the change will save the government £1.4bn each year.
The government is urging pensioners to check if they qualify for the benefit so they can secure the extra payment to help with heating costs during the colder months.
Extra support from British Gas
From Monday (4 November), British Gas is also reopening its annual winter grant scheme. Customers of all ages can apply for help with their energy bills (up to £2,000).
There’s also the individual and families fund from the British Gas Energy Trust – you can ask for help from this pot even if you’re with a different energy supplier.
The perks of pension credit
Pension credit can boost your income. It’s worth £3,900 a year on average and can also open doors to extra support with housing costs, council tax, heating bills and the winter fuel payment (worth up to £300).
To qualify for the winter fuel payment, you need to have been claiming pension credit or any of the listed benefits between 16 and 22 September 2024. You can make a backdated claim for the payment until 21 December.
If you receive pension credit, you may qualify for additional support, including:
- housing benefit if you rent
- help with interest payments if you own your home
- a free TV licence if you’re over 75
- assistance with NHS dental care, glasses and hospital transport costs
- help to heat your home
- a discount on Royal Mail redirection if you move house
You should be eligible for pension credit if your weekly income is below:
- £218.15 for a single person
- £332.95 for a couple
Even if you own your home or have savings or a private pension, you might still qualify, so see if you’re eligible with our free benefits calculator.
