DWP delays PIP changes due to speed up application process
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has hit the brakes on a major change that could have streamlined the application process for personal independence payments (PIP).
The nationwide online application system, meant to make life easier for thousands, has now been delayed for up to “several years”.
DWP had planned to roll out the system by the end of this year.
The promise of faster payments
Right now, only around 60 applicants per day can access this online system. New claims take around 20 weeks to process.
Reviews of existing claims can take even longer, with some waiting nearly a year.
There’s a significant backlog, causing delayed payments adding up to around £300m .
Making the online system available to all would significantly reduce decision-making times and lead to faster payments.
DWP has not yet given a clear timeline for when the online application system will be accessible for everyone.
What is PIP?
PIP is designed to help individuals who face long-term mental or physical health challenges.
You could be eligible for a maximum payment of £184.30 a week if you:
- are over 16 and under the state pension age
- have had a long-term condition that affects daily living or mobility for at least three months
- expect these difficulties to continue for at least nine months (unless terminally ill)
Claimants can also be on universal credit and get limited capability for work and work-related activity (LCWRA) payments.
How much can you receive?
PIP is divided into two components: daily living and mobility. Depending on your needs, you might be eligible for one, or both. Here’s what you could receive:
- mobility part: £28.70 or £75.75 per week
- daily living part: £72.65 or £105.55 per week
- total possible amount: up to £184.30 per week
