DWP warning: Benefit claims could be delayed by strike action this week
Thousands could find their claims for universal credit and PIP delayed because of week-long strike action by Jobcentre security guards that starts today (29 July 2024).
The walkout by more than 1,500 GBM members will last until Saturday and is part of a long-running dispute over pay and conditions.
The union said the guards who are employed by private firm G4S do a dangerous job with the majority (90%) being paid just the minimum wage.
Previous strikes were held in June and earlier this month.
During previous strikes, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said some Jobcentres would have to close and any claimants affected by delays to their applications would be informed.
Members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union are also taking industrial action in the same dispute.
