The “Next Smart Saver” tariff is the first of its kind in the UK. It’s what’s known as a Time of Use tariff, where electricity costs less during off-peak hours and more during busy times.

But unlike older versions aimed at people with electric cars or heat pumps, this one’s open to everyone (as long as you’ve got a smart meter).

That means more people now have the chance to take control of their energy use and their bills.

The hope is that other energy companies may follow suit if the new scheme proves popular.

Here’s how it works

The tariff splits the day into three time slots:

Super off-peak (2am-5am): 16.33p per kWh
Off-peak (5am-4pm and 7pm-2am): 20.11p per kWh
Peak (4pm-7pm): 38.48p per kWh

The idea is simple: you pay less for electricity when fewer people are using it. So, if you can run things like your washing machine or dishwasher outside of peak hours, you could pay less.

Prices vary a bit depending on where you live. But once you’re on the tariff, your rates are fixed for 12 months, so no mid-year surprises.

Why it matters

Energy bills have been high for a number of years now. This new tariff is a way to reduce your bills a little, without having to drastically change your usage.

It also helps take pressure off the grid at busy times, which is better for the environment too.

Ramona Vlasiu from E.ON Next said: “We know customers are looking for ways to take control of their bills. This tariff rewards people who can shift their energy use to off-peak times.”

What you’ll need to sign up

To get this tariff, you’ll need:

  • A working smart meter
  • To agree to share your energy usage every 30 minutes

There are no exit fees if you change your mind. And as a little bonus, E.ON Next will make a one-off donation to the Woodland Trust when you sign up.

You can check if it’s right for you at E.ON Next’s website.

What to do if you’re struggling with energy costs

If you’re worried about your energy bills or are behind on payments to your supplier, you’re not alone. There are several things you can do to lessen the pressure.

Contact your supplier - Most energy companies have support funds or payment plans. Don’t wait until you fall behind, get in touch and ask what help they can offer.

Apply for energy grants – Charities like British Gas Energy Trust offer help even if you're not a British Gas customer. Use the tool at Turn2Us to see what grants and assistance you qualify for.

Check if you're eligible for government help – You might qualify for the warm home discount, cold weather payment, or help from the household support fund.

Speak to us – We can help with budgeting, debt advice and benefits advice.
