Free electricity on Sundays with new electricity supplier scheme

Energy firm EDF have announced a new scheme allowing customers to get free electricity once a week if they reduce their usage during peak hours.

It comes after a trial  by the suppliers found around 88% of participants earned 16 hours or more of free electricity in at least one month, and 98% earned at least four hours.

How does it work?

To qualify for free electricity on Sundays, customers have to agree to reduce their energy consumption during peak hours on weekdays. Peak hours typically run from 4pm to 7 pm, Monday through Friday.

These are the times when energy demand is at its highest, and power companies often charge more for electricity.

By limiting their energy usage during these busy hours, customers will be rewarded with up to 16 hours of free electricity on Sundays. This means they’ll be able to do their high-energy tasks – like using the washing machine and dishwasher – on Sundays when electricity is free.

The initiative comes at a crucial time when many households are struggling with rising energy costs. It’s expected that energy bills will rise by £149 a year come 1 October, when Ofgem will decide on its price cap.

How to take part

To sign up for the programme, you need to be an EDF customer. You’ll also need to have a smart meter installed in your home. This will track your electricity usage and help you manage how much you’re using.

If you meet the criteria and want to join the Sunday Savers challenge, follow these simple steps:

  1. Log into your EDF account online. If you don’t have an account yet, you’ll need to create one using your EDF customer information.
  2. Go to the ‘About Me’ section in your account. In the section about your smart meter preferences, click on it and select the half-hourly consent option.
  3. Once you’re set up, you’ll receive notifications via WhatsApp or text message, letting you know if you’ve earned your free electricity for Sunday. You can also track your performance directly through EDF’s Energy Hub platform, which you can access via MyAccount.
