Good news… the household support fund is back!
April is certainly living up to its ‘awful April’ nickname, with multiple bill hikes adding an average of £660 a year to household expenses.

But it’s not all bad news… free payments of up to £200 to cover the cost of living will be available for eligible households through a scheme known as the household support fund (HSF).
The scheme was due to finish on 31 March 2025 and it was unclear whether it would be extended. But the government has confirmed an extension, ensuring support continues into 2026.
An additional £742m will be allocated to local authorities in England and funding for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will also continue.
What is the household support fund?
The HSF was launched in 2021 to provide financial support to people struggling to pay for essential expenses, such as food and utility bills.
It has since been extended several times, with over £2.5bn given out through local councils in cash and vouchers.
Each council decides what type of help to offer, but it usually comes in the form of vouchers for supermarkets or energy bills, one-off cash grants that don't need to be paid back or even free appliances, like air fryers.
The latest round will run between April 2025 and March 2026.
Who can apply?
The HSF is intended for anyone who is vulnerable, in hardship or crisis and can’t afford to pay for essential items.
You don’t need to be receiving benefits to be eligible and different councils do have different eligibility criteria.
How to apply
The fund is open for applications now.
You should get in touch with your local council to apply for the funding. Details of local councils can be found on the government website.
Tax credits to end
Don’t forget, tax credits are to end this weekend (Saturday 5 April) as claimants are being moved onto universal credit.
The department for work and pensions is opening its universal credit migration notice helpline on Saturday to make the process smoother.
