Government ‘has no plans to change PIP rules for Brits abroad’
The government has ruled out changing the eligibility criteria for personal independence payments (PIP) to Brits living overseas.

Lib Dem MP Angus MacDonald asked if ministers would consider allowing people who’ve been forced to move abroad due to life-threatening medical conditions to claim PIP.
In response, social security minister Sir Stephen Timms stated that PIP can continue to be paid during an absence from Great Britain for 13 weeks.
This, he said, can be increased to 26 weeks where the absence specifically relates to medical treatment of a condition that existed prior to a temporary absence.
“We have no plans to change these rules,” Sir Stephen said.
He added that a Brit might be able to keep getting the “daily living” part of their PIP for longer if they permanently move to a country in the European Economic Area, like France, Spain or Germany, or Switzerland, and are covered by the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement - which generally applies to those who were living there before the Brexit transition period ended.
“The length of time PIP can be exported for depends on their individual circumstances,” Sir Stephen confirmed.
What to do if you’re moving abroad
If you’re planning on relocating overseas permanently, you must tell your local Jobcentre Plus or the office that pays your benefits.
