Help with health costs is available, says minister
Measures to ensure prescriptions are “affordable for everyone” are available, the government has insisted.
Liberal Democrat MP Adam Dance asked how many people aren’t taking prescribed medication due to prescription charges.
In response, health minister Karin Smyth said no assessment has been made.
However, she stressed there are “extensive arrangements” in place in England to make sure everyone can get the medicines they need.
For example, she said 89% of prescription items are dispensed free of charge in the community in England.
The current prescription charge is £9.90 per item.
What other help is available?
Ms Smyth confirmed that people on low incomes can apply for help with their health costs through the NHS Low Income Scheme.
In addition, she stated that prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) are also available, which allow people to claim “as many prescriptions as they need for a set cost”.
She said three-month and 12-month certificates are available, adding that the 12-month option can be paid for in ten monthly instalments.
A PPC costs:
- £32.05 for three months
- £114.50 for 12 months
Ms Smyth went on to point out that exemptions from prescription charges are “already in place” for people with long-term or chronic conditions.
She said eligibility depends on:
- the patient’s age
- whether they’re in qualifying full-time education
- if they’re pregnant or have recently given birth
- if they have a qualifying medical condition
- whether they’re receiving certain benefits or a war pension
