How to haggle online (yes, you can)

Think haggling is just for market stalls and boutiques? Think again! You can haggle online too, without any awkward face-to-face exchanges

And, if you’re last-minute Christmas shopping and let’s face it, most of us are still scrambling to finish our lists on 18 December why not make those late purchases work in your favour?

With a smart bit of online haggling, there’s still time to bag a bargain.

Do your research

Found a cheaper price elsewhere? Use it to your advantage. Contact the retailer or your current provider and they’re likely to match or even beat the price rather than lose you as a customer.

Knowing the competition will give you the upper hand.

Use live chat

Many sites have a live chat feature, which are perfect for negotiating. Ask about the product, then throw in, "can you offer a discount?"

They might say no, but don’t be surprised if you get a discount code or a better deal.

Just be persistent – even if you’re dealing with an AI chatbot, the chances are a ‘real’ agent will pop up eventually and that will be your chance

Abandon your shopping trolley and wait

Online retailers hate abandoned trolleys. When you leave an item at the checkout, expect a flurry of emails begging you to complete the purchase.

Respond by saying you'd buy, but only if they offer a discount. Maybe ask for 10% off or free delivery. You’d be surprised how often this works, especially if you’ve done your ‘seen it cheaper elsewhere’ homework.

Keep it reasonable

Don’t ask for an unrealistic discount. If you go too low, they won’t take you seriously. Instead, know what you're willing to pay and aim for a reasonable request.

Hunt down price codes

Use browser extensions like Honey or Pouch to find discount codes while checking out. Sites like Quidco and TopCashback offer cashback deals too. Every little helps!

Be friendly, but firm

Whether haggling online or offline, always stay polite. But remember, you’re the one with the cash. If they want your business, they’ll negotiate.

Happy haggling!
