One in six uni students have used a food bank
As the rising cost of living tightens its grip, a survey of university students has found one in six (16%) have turned to food banks to survive.
The survey carried out by NUS Wales also found a third of students worry about money all the time.
Nearly three quarters said they’d had to ask for extra financial support during their studies, mainly from family.
Other findings
The survey also found rising costs meant:
- three in five students had missed out on social events
- half had skipped a meal
- three in ten had gone without heating
- a third were considering leaving their course
Working while learning
In a bid to afford to survive at university:
- almost three in five students have a job
- a fifth of these work more than 20 hours a week
- a third say working is having a negative effect on their studies
Rising costs
Earlier this week, a survey revealed students expect to have to spend over £400 more a month this year compared to previous years.
