Pensions minister Torsten Bell stated that pension credit provides people on low incomes who are over state pension age with extra money to help with living costs.

However, he said some low-income pensioners aren’t currently claiming it.

“We want to ensure as many people as possible have access to this support and urge pensioners to check their eligibility,” he said.

Mr Bell stated that pension credit will also “passport them” to receive other benefits, including:

  • winter fuel payments
  • help with rent
  • council tax
  • fuel bills
  • a free TV licence if you’re over 75

“That’s why government is taking significant steps to raise awareness and maximise take-up,” Mr Bell said.

He added that the government is increasing the standard minimum guarantee in pension credit by 4.1%. in April.

Low-income pensioners should contact local council

Pensioners on low incomes have also been encouraged to get in touch with their local council to see what other support might be available to them.

Mr Bell said some might qualify for the household support fund, which helps people facing financial hardship pay for essentials such as food, energy and water.

The household support fund in England has been extended by a further year until 31 March 2026.
