School uniform cap could save you £50 per child

School uniforms are costly and buying them every year - or even mid-term if the weather demands it - adds up.

If you're already on a tight budget, this added cost can be stressful. But there’s some good news. The government plans to introduce changes that could make uniforms more affordable for families.

How much are parents spending on school uniforms?

A survey by the retailer Wynsors found:

  • In 2024, 78% of parents spent over £100 per child on school uniforms.

  • More than half (57%) spent up to £249.

What is a branded school uniform?

Branded school uniform items are clothes or accessories that have a school’s name, logo or unique design. These items can often only be bought from a specific supplier.

Common branded items include:

  • blazers

  • sweaters/cardigans

  • PE kits

  • shirts

  • jumpers

  • ties

  • bags

In 2024:

  • 24% of primary schools required students to wear five or more branded items.

  • 70% of secondary schools required five or more branded items.

Government’s school uniform cap

The government plans to limit schools to three branded items per child, plus a tie. This change could save you more than £50 per child on uniforms when the measures are introduced in September 2026.

Why is this happening?

Anti-poverty and children’s charities have long called for the cost of school uniforms to be cut and have welcomed the move.

Mark Russell, chief executive of the Children’s Society, said:

“The high cost of school uniforms has put an unnecessary financial strain on families for far too longEvery child deserves to feel equal and included, regardless of their family’s income, and removing the pressure of costly branded uniforms is an essential step in making that a reality.”

Can you get help with school uniform costs now?

September 2026 is still a while away and you may need help now. If you’re struggling with uniform costs, you might be eligible for support.

  • Some local councils offer up to £200 as a non-repayable grant to help with the cost.

Will you be eligible for a school uniform grant?

Generally, you can get help if your child qualifies for free school meals. To qualify, you need to receive at least one of the following benefits:

  • child tax credit

  • income support

  • income-based job seekers allowance

  • income-related employment and support allowance

  • support under part VI of the immigration and asylum act 1999

  • the guaranteed element of pension credit

  • universal credit

  • working tax credit

How to apply for a school uniform grant

You should apply for a grant through your local council.

You’ll need proof:

  • of address

  • of guardianship

  • that you get one of the qualifying means-tested benefits

Additional savings with free breakfast clubs

In another cost-cutting move for parents, starting in April, all primary schools in England will offer free breakfast clubs, which could save parents more than £400 a year. A national rollout is expected by September.

If you’re not sure what support you might be eligible for, it’s worth contacting your local council directly. You can also speak to Citizens Advice or your school if you need extra financial support.
