This is the second time this year that UK banks have experienced problems with their online services on payday, following a technical glitch with the Barclays app in January.

What to do if you’ve missed a payment

If today’s technical issues have resulted in you missing a payment, the first thing to do is gather evidence of any problems caused. This might be an email or letter from a service provider confirming you’ve missed a payment and outlining any late fees.

Once you have your proof, make a complaint to your bank including your evidence. Ask your bank to cover your losses and do everything necessary to put your situation right. This means making sure you’re not in a worse position than before the missed payment.

If you’re not happy with your bank’s response, you can take your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman.

Be wary of scammers

Unexpected events affecting people’s finances see opportunistic scammers crawling out of the woodwork.

If you get an email, text message or phone call about today’s issues, be extremely wary.

Scams are getting ever more sophisticated and con artists may even use spoof numbers that make it look like a text message or phone call is from your bank.

If you have any doubts, check with your bank by ringing them using the number on the back of your card.

Never share your PIN, password or security codes – anyone asking for these is definitely a scammer.
