What’s being done to tackle fuel poverty in rural areas?

If someone has to spend a large chunk of their income on keeping their home at a reasonable temperature, they can be defined as fuel poor.

It’s a real issue in rural areas especially, as homes in these places are typically less energy-efficient and often rely on more expensive heating fuels.

So what’s the government doing to tackle this very specific problem?

Well, minister for energy consumers Miatta Fahnbulleh has confirmed that £3.4bn is being invested in heat decarbonisation and household energy efficiency over the next three years.

This, she stated, includes £1.8bn to support fuel poverty schemes.

Ms Fahnbulleh noted that rural homes are currently being supported through energy efficiency schemes including:

In addition, she said the Warm Home Discount scheme offers eligible low-income and vulnerable households, including those in rural areas, a £150 rebate off their winter energy bill.

Ms Fahnbulleh added that the government is also reviewing the 2021 fuel poverty strategy for England, and about to consult on making sure privately rented homes achieve Energy Performance Certificate C or equivalent by 2030.

How widespread is fuel poverty?

According to the latest government estimates, 13% of households in England can be classed as fuel poor, along with 31% in Scotland, 14% in Wales and 24% in Northern Ireland.
