3m still haven’t filed tax return

More than 3m people still haven’t submitted their self-assessment tax return - even though the deadline is today (31 January).

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is now warning that if you don’t file the form on time, you could get a £100 penalty.

However, HMRC says there are some reasonable excuses for not handing in your form on time, including:

  • bereavement
  • health problems that lead to you being admitted to hospital
  • dealing with a life-threatening illness

HMRC will also consider:

  • property, files and paperwork being destroyed by fire, flood or theft
  • software failure
  • issues with your personal computer
  • problems with HMRC online services

Speaking to BBC News, Myrtle Lloyd of HMRC said: “Customers' reasons for not paying their tax bill or arranging a payment plan by the deadline will be considered individually.”

Can I appeal a fine?

If you’re fined, you can challenge it using an appeal form or by writing to HMRC.

But Ms Lloyd said appeals won’t be considered until your tax return has been submitted and payment has been made.

Help with filling in your tax return is available

HMRC has stressed that help and support is available for those who haven’t yet started their return, including:

  • live webinars
  • video tutorials
  • online help sheets

So don't delay. You don't have much time left!
