How to get more chocolate for less this Easter
You might have noticed that Easter eggs are costing a little bit more in the supermarket this year.
Published: 14 April 2025
In fact, consumer group Which? recently found that the price of chocolate has gone up by almost a fifth in the last year.
But there is one way to avoid paying over the odds for your chocolate-y treats this Easter - swapping out traditional eggs for bars.
Check the weight before buying
Easter eggs are hollow so you often end up paying largely for the packaging and very little actual chocolate.
But with a regular chocolate bar, it’s the other way round, so more there’s more for you and your loved ones to enjoy.
And there are plenty of Easter-themed chocolate bars that give you a taste of your favourite seasonal treat for less.
For example, you could save several pounds and have more chocolate to enjoy by buying Cadbury Mini Egg bars instead of individual packets of Mini Eggs.
According to research from MyVoucherCodes, nearly half (49%) of chocolate lovers in Britain would happily get a bar instead of an egg if it meant they got more weight in chocolate.
So if you’re buying Easter treats in the next few days, compare the weight and price to work out what offers the best value.
After all, who’s going to be unhappy on Easter Sunday if they have more chocolate to devour, even if it isn’t egg-shaped?
Other ways to save money on Easter chocolate
Look for supermarket offers
Many shops have multibuy deals. Asda, for example, has a “4 for £11.96” offer, so you can save nearly £2 on four chocolate eggs.
Go to budget supermarkets
Low-cost supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl offer great alternatives to expensive, branded Easter eggs that are cheaper and arguably just as tasty.
Use reward and loyalty cards
You could get money off Easter eggs if you use the points you’ve built up on a loyalty card.
Lots of supermarkets also offer lower prices on certain products to members of their loyalty schemes.
Shop around
Each supermarket will have its own prices and offers, so find out which ones boast the best deal.
You can do this easily with supermarket comparison sites such as mysupermarketcompare.co.uk and Trolly.co.uk.
Why are prices going up?
Chocolate prices have shot up recently partly because of a poor cocoa harvest in December, and many expect them to remain high for some time.
Giles Atwell, co-founder of chocolatier Russell and Atwell, told Express.co.uk: “It's likely to get a little worse before starting to improve in 2026.
“But for the rest of this year, prepare to pay more for chocolate bars.”
For many of us, Easter and eating huge amounts of chocolate go hand in hand.
So it makes sense that we’re willing to make smart changes to keep this tradition alive without breaking the bank.
