It comes as the consumer group unveiled the UK’s best supermarket, with M&S coming out on top.

What’s the criteria?

Nine supermarkets – Waitrose, M&S, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Lidl and Iceland – were graded on their:

  • value for money
  • overall customer service
  • staff availability and helpfulness
  • store appearance
  • queuing time at the checkout
  • self-service
  • stock availability
  • range of products
  • overall quality of own label and fresh products

Best value for money

Budget supermarkets Aldi and Lidl both scored the highest, as did Iceland, which was also highly rated for stock availability.

All three retailers scored four out of a possible five stars in the value category – the highest of all nine supermarkets.

No supermarket received the maximum score, with Which? suggesting this may be because many households are still tightening the purse strings when it comes to groceries.

Food prices are also expected to rise this year – the British Retail Consortium warns costs could climb by 4.2% in the second half of 2025.

The scores

Although Which? named M&S its recommended provider, with a top score of 79%, Aldi and Iceland weren’t far behind – they each scored an overall 72%.

Lidl’s 69% fared slightly better than Asda and Morrisons, which both scored lowest for value.

Which? retail editor Reena Sewraz said that while shoppers cared about a good experience and quality products, Aldi, Lidl or Iceland “may be the preferred choice for those who prioritise affordability above all else”.
