Extra help you can get if you claim personal independence payment

Find out what other benefits, grants and discounts you might be entitled to if you get personal independence payment (PIP).

Extra money and help

If you get PIP, you might be able to get extra help. This might be more money on top of your existing benefits, or reductions on certain payments e.g. council tax.

You won’t get this extra help automatically, you’ll need to apply once you have your PIP award letter.

Benefit premiums

If you get PIP, you might be entitled to a top-up (AKA a premium) to other benefits you’re receiving, including:

  • housing benefit
  • jobseeker’s allowance
  • income support
  • working tax credits
  • employment and support allowance – if you get the PIP daily living component
  • pension credit – if you get the PIP daily living component

Get in touch with the office that pays your PIP to ask what other help you can get.

They’ll tell you what you’re entitled to and how much money you’ll get.

You might need to send them a copy of your PIP award letter.

Council tax discounts

You might get money off your council tax bill if you get the daily living or mobility component of PIP.

The discount you’ll get will depend on a few things e.g. the component and rate of PIP you get.

Contact your council to tell them you get PIP. They might want to see a copy of your PIP award letter.

If you get PIP for a child

If your child gets PIP, is aged 16-20 and still in education or training, you might get:

  • more housing benefit
  • money off your council tax

Get in touch with both the office that pays your housing benefit and the council and tell them your child gets PIP. They’ll tell you how much extra help you can get.

Travel help

When you get your PIP letter, you can apply for:

You might also be able to get free local bus travel or use the motability scheme if you get the enhanced PIP mobility rate.
