Aldi and Lidl to open new UK stores as part of nationwide expansion
Budget supermarkets Aldi and Lidl are ramping up their expansion efforts into 2025, with both chains set to open new stores across the UK.
Aldi plans to open 30 new stores next year, as part of its long-term goal of having 1,500 stores across the UK.
Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “At Aldi, our unwavering commitment has always been to provide Britain with the best value groceries.
"We recognise that there are still areas without an Aldi store, so our expansion plans for 2025 are designed to address some of these gaps.”
Town-centre and edge-of-centre locations
Aldi is looking for town centre locations, as well as edge-of-centre and retail park sites with space for a 20,000 sq. foot store and approximately 100 car parking spaces. The ideal venues will also be easily accessible from main roads and offer good visibility.
This expansion follows Aldi's recent openings of four new stores in early December in:
-
Cribbs Causeway, Bristol
-
Hetton-le-Hole, Tyne and Wear
-
Ashton-in-Makerfield, Greater Manchester
-
Macduff, Banffshire
Lidl’s expansion
Aldi’s budget competitor, Lidl, is also expanding. In early December, the supermarket opened six new stores across the UK, including locations in Shinfield, Bovey Tracey, Downham Market, and Stirchley.
This followed the launch of four new stores in Bristol, Hemel Hempstead, Ipswich, and Hoxton in November.
As part of its ongoing expansion, Lidl plans to open eight more stores in early 2025, with an additional 40 stores set to follow in its next financial year.
On the opening of six new stores in December, Richard Taylor, Lidl GB chief development officer, said: “As we head into December, opening six stores in a single day highlights the incredible momentum behind our expansion in our 30th year.
“This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering affordable, high-quality products to more households across the country, especially at a time of year when value matters most.”
