Food app now tells you about yellow sticker items in local stores
The waste-reducing app Olio has launched a new ‘deals’ section.
Under this section, you can find yellow sticker items at local participating supermarkets, such as Co-op, Spar, Budgens and Morrisons Daily.
What do I need to do?
To see if you can bag a bargain, head to the ‘deals’ section under ‘food’ to discover what’s available near you.
Add any items of interest to your watchlist so you can keep an eye on their availability.
Then head to the shop to grab the yellow sticker items you’ve spotted.
What is Olio?
Olio is a waste-reducing app. It lets you pick up food and household items in your local area and give away what you don’t need.
The app is free to use and celebrates the benefits of building community spirit, so promotes sharing as a way of getting to know your neighbours and connecting with like-minded people.
Until last year, everything on Olio was free but in 2023 a new selling feature was added to the app. This means you can now make money selling things you don’t need and save money buying secondhand.
What can I get?
What you can pick up depends entirely on what your neighbours have to offer.
You say how far you’re willing to travel, from 0.3 miles to 16 miles, and you can sort items by newest or closest.
Click ‘request this’ if you see something free you want and arrange collection by message.
If you’re interested in buying something, the price will be displayed in the top left corner of the image. If you want to haggle, you can use the message function to make an offer.
Borrowing items
Olio also includes a borrowing option. This means neighbours can lend you items that you return after use. This can be useful for things like fancy dress outfits, or pricey DIY appliances that you're only likely to use occasionally, such as drills.
For more expensive items, lenders may set certain borrower criteria e.g. they may only lend items to people who have borrowed at least a few times before and have a rating of 4 stars or above.
