How long does a PIP decision take?

Personal independence payment (PIP) decisions can take several months. You can contact the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for an update on PIP waiting times.

How long does a new PIP claim take?

From the date you first apply until your first payment, a new PIP claim can take up to six months. If you’re eligible, DWP will backdate your payments to the date you started your claim.

What if I’m not successful?

If you aren’t successful, you can complete a PIP mandatory reconsideration. There’s no time limit on how long DWP can take to reassess your claim. If you’re unsuccessful at this stage, you can take your claim to an independent tribunal.

Although this could take several months, more cases are successful at tribunal and, if yours is, your payments will be backdated to the original claim date.

How long does a PIP review decision take?

When your PIP claim is near the award end date, DWP will send you a letter asking you to complete an award review. You’ll have one month to complete the form and return it. If you miss the deadline, your PIP could be stopped. DWP should contact you in plenty of time before your award end date. If you haven’t heard anything and your award end date is within a few months, contact them directly.

A PIP review decision can take a few weeks to a few months. It’s best to contact DWP for up-to-date waiting times. You’ll still receive payments while your claim is being reviewed.
